Jørpeland Kraft has been given licence to construct “Jøssang kraftverk” and “Dalen I kraftverk”.
The development started in 2008 and will provide a total of 102 GWh annually when completed in 2010.
Jørpeland Kraft is owned 2/3 by Lyse Produksjon AS and 1/3 by Scana Steel Stavanger.
Jørpeland Kraft bought the reversed rights to Jørpelandsvassdraget from the Norwegian authorities,
effective 01.01.1997. From this point in time, the annual power production has amounted to around 40 GWh.
New power stations
The final decision to develop Jørpelandsvassdraget was taken in August 2008. The construction of Jøssang kraftverk
was started during the fall of 2008, with blasting operations for tunnel building from Jøssang to the new power station,
600 metres into the rock. The tunnel work will continue 6 km up to Dalavatn from there. Jøssang power station will
according to plan start operating in December 2010. The construction of the power station Dalen I, which is situated
near the existing power station in Jørpelandselva, started in 2009 and operations are planned from April 2010.
The development will provide a total of 102 GWh annually, and has a cost estimate of around NOK 400 million.
As at autumn 2009, NVE (Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate) recommended that Jørpeland Kraft
should transfer water from Solheimsånå (Solheim river) to Jøssang Kraftverk. This transfer will increase the production
with 7 GWh to 109 GWh.
The development takes care of many interests
In connection with the licencing award, the Ministry of Oil and Energy stated in their press release that the development
takes care of the many different interests in Jørpelandsvassdraget in a good way: “The development will increase
access to renewable energy, and is a good contribution to better the power situation without any new interventions”.
The chosen development alternative secures a good flow of water in the river, ensuring important environmental values
connected to fishing, bathing and outdoor life.
This development contributes considerably to local and regional economic growth. Strand municipality will receive around
NOK 3.5 million in annual taxes and charges, and also a trade fund with a value of around NOK 11 million that will in large
part be used for developing a business area on Scana Steel Stavanger’s and Strand municipality’s property on Grøtnes.
Using remains from the tunnel project at Jøssang power station, an outer perimeter for the landfill will be created.
The area inside the perimeter will be filled with seabased deposits and sand and slag from the production at Scana Steel Stavanger.
Operations and maintenance
Scana Steel Stavanger is responsible for operations and maintenance of the existing power stations until the
completion of Jøssang power station. When the development is completed, Lyse will take charge of the operation of the
power stations. It is Lyse’s company for development and operations, Lyse Infra, which is directing and carrying out the
development project on behalf of Jørpeland Kraft.
