Motala Verkstad constructs, prepares and installs complex mechanical systems for customers within marine transport, industry, infrastructure, electrical, energy and the processing industry.
Motala Verkstad was founded in 1822 by Baltzar von Platen in order to bring about a large amount of iron parts, tools, sluice gates and bridges for the construction of Göta Kanal – leading from the east coast to the west coast of Sweden. When the channel was completed in the 1840’s, the company took a new direction under new leadership.
Motala Verkstad gained international fame under Otto Edvard Carlsund from 1843-1870, won several awards, also at the World Expo, and was praised as the world’s most competent production company, in a class of its own. The famous writer Jules Verne also esteemed the company in his classic “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea”, as the prow of the fictitious submarine “Nautilus” was supposed to have been built at Motala.
Products and services
Today the company constructs, prepares and installs complex mechanical systems for customers within marine transport, industry, infrastructure, electrical, energy and the processing industry. From the outset, the attitude has always been to stay in the technological forefront and make the impossible possible.
Activities are divided into the following areas: contract production, component manufacture, shafts, and bridges and industrial service. The single product the company has had in its portfolio since the beginning is moveable bridges, to which we now mostly do service and maintenance.
Well-working collaboration between Motala and Scana Group

The company is in every way affected by Scana’s actions, through their ownership, as a large customer and also a large supplier to Motala. Since the cooperation between the companies is wide, both parties can offer a large array of products. Together, Scana and Motala Verkstad can deliver complete products from a to z, something that renders Motala Verkstad a large competitive advantage. This, again, creates more opportunities and increased profitability for both companies.
