Scana Mar-El is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of maritime control systems for propulsion and manoeuvring of ships, in addition to control systems for special applications.
The systems are supplied for most types of vessel, from fast ferries and yachts to fishing boats, ferries and supply vessels.
Scana Mar-El is established in Dalen in Telemark, Norway, and has been part of Scana Industrier ASA since 1996. Since
the start in 1974, the company has delivered about 2800 control and navigational systems. Today’s products use the
latest technology and are developed based on our extensive experience with safety measures.
Market and customers
Scana Mar-El operates with a specialist expertise in the global market, and we have observed that packaged
solutions are becoming more and more sought after. Scana Mar-El caters to this demand through strategic
collaborations with relevant partners. Among them is the sister company Scana Volda, which supplies gear and
propeller equipment. Together, Scana supplies a complete propulsion system. In addition, Scana Mar-El has increased
focus on refurbishment sales, plus an increased commitment to service and after sales.
Our key customers are engine suppliers, gear and propeller manufacturers, as well as shipyards and shipping companies.
The systems are supplied to vessels throughout the world, many via Norwegian and European engine, gear and
propeller manufacturers. The company holds a significant market position. For instance, we have a market share of
about 70 % for propulsion control systems and steering gears for fast ferries with controllable pitch propellers,
where strategic partners supply gear and propeller equipment.
In addition, Scana Mar-El’s agency department supplies components of very high quality. These components are
used within offshore, telecommunication, energy, sea and land based defence installations and other kinds of industry.
The agency department represents large international players within advanced high-tech components, and has
a significant customer portfolio within the technological industry in the Norwegian market. In 2009, this department
launched a new, in-house developed product: joystick with profibus, which has generated much interest in the market.
Products and services
The company’s main products are:
• Maritime control systems for the propulsion and manoeuvring of ships: propulsion systems, rudder control
systems and smaller steering machines, thruster control systems and joystick systems
• Agency: positioning sensors, joysticks/MMI and instrumentation
Scana Mar-El has a keen focus on the market, and frequently commercialises new products. In 2009, the company
launched a new high-tech remote control system that replaces an existing system, something that puts us in the
position of supplying to an increasingly demanding and complex market.
Most of the activity relates to product development, and the company is interested collaborating in development projects
with other parties, often customers and users. Scana Mar- El currently offers control systems for the most common
propulsion and manoeuvring units/systems. In the market for high-tech solutions, further development, particularly
development according to customer specifications, is essential. Therefore, ongoing product development and
upgrading is an integral part of our work. At least 15 % of the staff is working purely on product development at any chosen time.
