Hamnegaten 24. P.o.box 205 N-6101 Volda Norway
From being a supplier of propulsion systems to shipyards and ship-owners in Norway, the company has developed into a reputable international player, with a 90 % export.
Volda Mekaniske Verksted was founded in 1913 in Volda, Norway, and was taken over by the Scana group in 1998. Volda Mekaniske Verksted started as an engine factory and later developed into including shipbuilding and production of propellers and gears. At the end of the 1980s, the last hull was delivered – and the shipyard was removed in 1997. Since 1966, gears and propulsion systems have been the most important products. Scana Volda has been a Consortial Partner to Caterpillar (MaK) since 1996.
Scana’s propulsion equipment is part of a complete propulsion package for ships, consisting of engines, gears, propellers and remote control systems. A close cooperation with ship designers and leading electronics suppliers has created a strong focus on developing products that are a part of eco-friendly hybrid and diesel-electric propulsion systems. This collaboration has resulted in extensive deliveries of this type of advanced solutions.
Market and customers
Scana Volda has appointed representatives in the form of agents, offices and strategic partners in Iceland, the Netherlands, Spain, Singapore, India, China, Korea, the USA, Brazil and Chile. The propulsion division of Scana established an office in New Orleans in 2009, enabling us to be closer to our customers, especially owners in the offshore industry. In addition, Scana has established an office in Brazil, which will be acting as headquarters for Scana Volda, and the local sales and service activities will be further expanded from here. In light of Petrobras’s extensive ambition programme, Brazil is viewed as highly interesting for Scana Volda. Scana Volda’s systems are included in ship design by several companies, who market Scana Volda to their customers. Product and concept development is often done together with designers, where Scana Volda contributes as a consultant.
2009 was a challenging year, with a low order intake and a large number of cancellations worldwide. Scana Volda is not untouched by the situation, but due to a large amount of projects for the offshore segment, the company avoided the big share of cancellations within the bulk and cargo segment. As a result of the general recession, the company is expecting a reduced turnover in 2010. A deliberate commitment to service should neutralise part of the turnover decline for new sales towards 2011.
Products
Scana Volda develops, designs, manufactures and sells gear and propeller equipment for all types of ships, up to sizes of approximately 20,000 kW engine output. In recent years, Scana Volda has produced and assembled the smallest gear sizes in the Czech Republic. This has provided the company with the needed production capacity in a period of high activity. As part of a complete propulsion system, gear and propeller equipment is supplied together with the remote control system from Scana Mar-El. There is a keen interest among our partners to develop propulsion systems in cooperation with Scana Volda, and a further commitment to deliver complete packages within hybrid and diesel-electric solutions is expected to yield even further results.
The sales and marketing of services are mainly focussed on the company’s own products in the form of start-up, maintenance, replacements and breakdowns, as well as a concentration on the sale of special services and inspection.
In 2008, Scana Marine Service was established as an area of commitment, with a strong focus on worldwide sales of services. This commitment immediately yielded positive results, and the growth continued in 2009. Synergies between the propulsion companies and a growing internationally active commitment are expected to yield an increased turnover and results for the service organisation.
