Scana Industries' activities involve, among other things, the manufacture and processing of steel and other alloys. At Scana, we realize that as a player in this industry, we contribute both considerably to recycling, and to emissions to the external environment. It is a fact that the world needs steel, and we see it as our task to supply as cleanly manufactured a product as possible, thus ensuring the smallest possible negative impact on the environment. Our activities in China provide an example of how we exceed local environmental regulations and help set high standards. Our environmental initiative in China is performed in line with European regulations, and could have been transposed onto Norway from day one. This is something we are proud of.

Steel

Steel production is in essence a recycling activity, which involves great quantities of scrap metal being recycled. However, much energy is also spent in the recycling process.

Björneborg

Scana Steel Björneborg meets the goal of the Scana group of having as small an impact on the environment as possible. As a concrete measure, scrap steel is recycled, and steel for recycling is mainly sourced from local suppliers located within a maximum radius of 150 km. The company is certified to ISO 9001.

Stavanger

The company is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. One of our main suppliers, FOSECO, has designated us the most environmental friendly foundry in Europe, based on our choice of forming sand, binding agents and hardeners. The company continually adopts new routines to reduce its negative impact on the environment, be this within waste management, filtering or emission reductions. In 2006 the company published an environmental report that is currently being adopted. Assessments as to the measures' success are performed regularly by West-lab in accordance with international standards. The company is licensed for manufacture by the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT), whose regulations regarding emissions to air and land deposits are becoming stricter.

Jørpeland Kraft

In connection with Jørpeland Kraft being awarded its licence, the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy stated in its press release that the development safeguarded the various interests relating to the Jørpeland watercourse in a good way: “The development will increase access to renewable energy, and make a positive contribution to the power situation without the need for further intervention”. The chosen development alternative secures a sound water flow in the river, thus safeguarding important environmental values connected to fishing, swimming and outdoor life.

Söderfors

Actual production at Söderfors does not generate any harmful emissions. Waste resulting from production mainly takes the form of scrap steel/metal, which is later sold; something that is both environmentally friendly and generates income. A cleaning plant for cooling agents has been installed, and measurements show that the water that is discharged is cleaner than the water that comes into the plant. The company uses electrical power for the production and oil for heating the ovens. The company’s waste management procedures adhere to Norwegian laws and regulations.

Booforge

Despite being a company with long traditions, Booforge is nonetheless adopting a conscious modernisation focus with the aim of reducing any harmful impact on the environment. In recent years the company has made significant changes with regard to the environment which have benefited the local community in which the company operates, as well as changes to production routines. Booforge is also taking action to reduce its energy consumption.

Leshan

Leshan Scana is situated in a Chinese town with about 200,000 inhabitants. In the past the plant, which was previously state-owned, generated great deal of pollution due to everything being coal-based. Around the turn of millennium the company converted to electrical and gas power, and by the end of 2007 a dust collection system had been installed for the entire company. Leshan Scana is now a pioneer on environmental matters, and has initiated an environmental programme to help other industrial businesses in the region reduce their emissions to the air. The company now runs entirely on hydropower generated from a nearby river. The Sichuan province, in which Leshan Scana is located, is also an important producer of natural gas.

Marine

Scana’s marine business area mainly involves high-tech manufacture, which has little or no harmful impact on the environment.

Volda

Scana Volda manufactures products that help protect and safeguard the environment, crews and shipments. Among other things the company manufactures emergency electromotors for chemical tankers and flexible solutions to make engines more environmentally friendly. Optimisation of engine usage represents a continuing ambition for the company.

Mar-El

Scana Mar-El's activities do not have any polluting effect and the company's waste management procedures adhere to Norwegian laws and regulations.

Skarpenord

The production of hydraulic actuators and systems at Skarpenord does not have any polluting effects. The main by-product of production is scrap iron/metal which is later sold. This is both environmentally friendly and generates income. The company mainly uses electrical power for its production activities, but some diesel fuel is also used to heat the production facilities.

Zamech

A newly acquired technological platform, combined with existing gear and propeller technology from Scana Volda and remote control systems from Scana Mar-El, will allow Zamech to develop further with regard to meeting the environmental and market related requirements of the future.

Oil and Gas

Offshore Technology

In its equipment repair activities, Scana Offshore Technology is essentially a recycling company. The company is certified to ISO 9001 and its activities have little or no negative impact on the external environment. However, Scana Offshore Technology continually monitors its environmental impact and prepares new indicators to assess how its activities may impact the environment.

Materials Technology Centre

Scana MTC's impact on the external environment is limited, as it applies non-destructive testing (NDT). In this process, chemicals are used in a controlled environment to assess the surfaces of steel constructions. After use, the chemicals are treated as toxic waste. The company maintains a constant focus on the control of chemicals.

Wikov

Scana Wikov supplies its products and services on a commission basis, and its production activities thus have no negative environmental impact. The company nevertheless works to influence its suppliers to continually focus on environmental measures where possible.

Offshore Vestby

Offshore Vestby was established in 1953 but has since then moved to modern production facilities. This allows for a precisely controlled production environment, and the company currently has no negative emissions to the environment. The engineering and design branch of the company has no negative impact on the external environment.

Environmental impact

The Scana group comprises companies that affect the external environment through noise pollution and emissions. The group is licensed by the SFT and the emissions generated are regarded as not exceeding the permitted levels. The group works continually to reduce emissions, waste sent to deposits and other negative environmental impacts. Waste from the group's activities is managed and handled according to the applicable regulations, and recycled where applicable. The companies within the steel business area buy large quantities of scrap for remelting, and are thus also active within the recycling industry.
